Field Trips Overview

Field Trips will be on the weekend BEFORE the GCAGS Convention.

Conference registration is required for enrollment in field trips and short courses, with the exception of the More! Rocks in Your Head teacher program. See the Registration page for details on registration options.

The following Pre-Convention Field Trips are planned in conjunction with the 2015 GCAGS Convention:

  • Trip #1: Upper Cambrian Microbial Carbonate Mounds in Central Texas

    Leaders: Andre Droxler (Rice University Earth Science), Bill Morgan (Consultant), Dan Lehrmann (Trinity University Geosciences)
    Starts Thursday (9/17) 3:00 pm, Returns Sunday (9/20) 3:00 pm
    Departs from and returns to the Hilton Americas
    Maximum 20 Participants; 4 Student spots available
    Cost: $750 per person; Price reduced to $125 for students (includes transportation, guidebook, kayak rental, and hotel; does not include meals or refreshments)

  • Trip #2: Eagle Ford Unconventional Reservoir Field Seminar – CANCELLED

    Leaders: Art Donovan (BP), Mike Pope (Texas A&M University), Rand Gardner (BP)
    Starts Thursday (9/17) 7:00 am, Returns Sunday (9/20) 2:00 pm
    Departs from and returns to the Hilton Americas
    Maximum 30 Participants; 4 Student spots available
    Cost: $900 per person; Price reduced to $225 for students (includes transportation, guidebook, hotel and some meals)
    NB: This field trip includes day-long hikes up to 6 miles in length. Delegates need to be in sound physical condition to partake in this field seminar.

  • Trip #3: Geology of Canyon Lake Gorge

    Leader: Joel Saylor (University of Houston Earth & Atmospheric Sciences)
    Saturday (9/19), 8:30 am – 6:30 pm
    Departs from and returns to the Hilton Americas
    Maximum 21 Participants; 4 Student spots available
    Cost: $100 per person; $25 for students (includes transportation, lunch and refreshments, guidebook, and admission fee)

  • Trip #7: Field Work on Active Faults in Houston

    Leader: Shuhab Khan (University of Houston Earth & Atmospheric Sciences)
    Sunday (9/20), 8:00 am – 4:00 pm
    Departs from and returns to the Hilton Americas
    Maximum 18 Participants; 4 Student spots available
    Cost: $100 per person; $25 for students (includes transportation, lunch and refreshments, and guidebook)
